Dalton tensed at a scrape from the front door.
Given what Ephraim had told him, it was probably Malachi, but he wouldnât take any chances. Slipping his weapon from the holster, he flattened himself against a wall where he could see the front door but where he wouldnât be readily seen by someone entering.
The lock scraped and the door swung open. Soft whistling drifted to him and a familiar silhouette stepped inside, turned, and relocked the door. Malachi paused by the alarm panel, which was deactivated since Dalton was here and on guard, then shrugged and entered the living room.
Malachiâs steps slowed and a grin spread as his attention landed on Dalton. âHavenât seen you in a while.â
Re-holstering his gun, Dalton shook his head slowly. âNot for lack of trying on my part, trust me.â
Malachi dropped into an end chair and assessed Dalton. âAre you here to try to convince me to talk to your boss?â
âNot even close.â Dalton perched on the edge of the sofa and folded his hands on top of his knees. âI quit. Iâm working for Lincoln now and he sent me here to help Ephraim clear up this murder mess.â
âGood. Iâm happy to hear that Ephraim has you on his side.â
Yeah, well if he found any evidence that Ephraim was guilty, neither Malachi or Lincoln would be too happy to have him here. âNow that Iâm not working for SAB any longer, I can tell you that you made the right call. My boss, the one who wanted me to bring you in, heâs in The Shadows. I donât know why he was so interested in you, but it wasnât good. I know that.â
The truth was, heâd always known it, but heâd chosen to ignore it.
Malachi didnât look surprised, nor did he look worried. âIâm telling you, when you listen to and obey God, itâs always the best path. Thatâs all I did. Listen and obey.â
Yeah, sure. Whatever.
âYou need to watch your back.â Dalton worked up his best intense stare. âNiles Wilson wonât give up. Heâll put someone else on your tail, someone who wonât care that you didnât do any of the things heâs accusing you of.â
âGodâs watching my back.â Malachi grinned that enigmatic smile that said he knew more than Dalton did. âThereâs no better option than that.â
Sure there was. Malachi simply didnât know it yet. âLincoln would like you to join our team. Iâm sure he could use someone with your, uh, perspective.â
Honestly, he didnât know what â if anything â Malachi could bring to the table, but he also suspected that saying Lincoln wanted to protect Malachi wouldnât go over well, either.
âThatâs kind, but Iâll be okay. Remember, Godâs got me.â
Riiight. Just like God had Tari when sheâd been hunted like an animal, or Britt when heâd been abducted by a stalker, or Charae when sheâd watched her friend die?
If he knew Malachi half as well as he thought he did, he also knew thereâd be no convincing him.
