Dalton tensed at a scrape from the front door.

Given what Ephraim had told him, it was probably Malachi, but he wouldn’t take any chances. Slipping his weapon from the holster, he flattened himself against a wall where he could see the front door but where he wouldn’t be readily seen by someone entering.

The lock scraped and the door swung open. Soft whistling drifted to him and a familiar silhouette stepped inside, turned, and relocked the door. Malachi paused by the alarm panel, which was deactivated since Dalton was here and on guard, then shrugged and entered the living room.

Malachi’s steps slowed and a grin spread as his attention landed on Dalton. “Haven’t seen you in a while.”

Re-holstering his gun, Dalton shook his head slowly. “Not for lack of trying on my part, trust me.”

Malachi dropped into an end chair and assessed Dalton. “Are you here to try to convince me to talk to your boss?”

“Not even close.” Dalton perched on the edge of the sofa and folded his hands on top of his knees. “I quit. I’m working for Lincoln now and he sent me here to help Ephraim clear up this murder mess.”

“Good. I’m happy to hear that Ephraim has you on his side.”

Yeah, well if he found any evidence that Ephraim was guilty, neither Malachi or Lincoln would be too happy to have him here. “Now that I’m not working for SAB any longer, I can tell you that you made the right call. My boss, the one who wanted me to bring you in, he’s in The Shadows. I don’t know why he was so interested in you, but it wasn’t good. I know that.”

The truth was, he’d always known it, but he’d chosen to ignore it.

Malachi didn’t look surprised, nor did he look worried. “I’m telling you, when you listen to and obey God, it’s always the best path. That’s all I did. Listen and obey.”

Yeah, sure. Whatever.

“You need to watch your back.” Dalton worked up his best intense stare. “Niles Wilson won’t give up. He’ll put someone else on your tail, someone who won’t care that you didn’t do any of the things he’s accusing you of.”

“God’s watching my back.” Malachi grinned that enigmatic smile that said he knew more than Dalton did. “There’s no better option than that.”

Sure there was. Malachi simply didn’t know it yet. “Lincoln would like you to join our team. I’m sure he could use someone with your, uh, perspective.”

Honestly, he didn’t know what – if anything – Malachi could bring to the table, but he also suspected that saying Lincoln wanted to protect Malachi wouldn’t go over well, either.

“That’s kind, but I’ll be okay. Remember, God’s got me.”

Riiight. Just like God had Tari when she’d been hunted like an animal, or Britt when he’d been abducted by a stalker, or Charae when she’d watched her friend die?

If he knew Malachi half as well as he thought he did, he also knew there’d be no convincing him.

“How about
